Arches fail at the haunch: that is where the rafter meets the post and where a decorative cut removes section. We specify a hidden steel bracket at the joint under decorative cuts, put a 10 mm rain gap under the seat board, and quote a maximum unsupported span per post size, so a 3 m arch with 70 mm posts is something we will decline to build, not something we will quietly ship and argue about later.

Can you engineer a 4 m span without a mid-post?
Not in 90 mm solid pine, a 4 m clear span wants a 115 × 115 or laminated section plus deeper rafters, and the wind sail area on a slatted roof becomes the governing load. We will either add a mid-post, move to glued-laminated sections, or supply it as two modules. We would rather lose the line item than ship a sagging arch.
Do the timber posts rot in the ground?
Ground contact is class 4 territory. Every arch ships with spikes or base plates so the timber never sits in soil, and the two lower end grains are end-sealed as standard. Customers who ignore the spikes and bury the post get exactly the failure you would expect, and we will say so on the insert.
Is a flat-pack arch damaged easily in a container?
Long rafters are the risk: we band them in pairs with stickers, keep bundles off the container floor line, and use a 0.15 mm liner. Damage claims on this SKU run below 0.5 % over 18 shipments since 2023.
What is the MOQ for a custom span?
50 kits for a modified span within our post-size logic; 100 kits if you change the geometry enough that we build a new jig (quoted at RFQ, credited at 300 kits).
